Why You Should Just Be A Friend Today
Do you typically choose the front or back?
“Don’t walk in front of me… I may not follow
Don’t walk behind me… I may not lead
Walk beside me… just be my friend”
― Albert Camus
Just for today…
Just be a friend.
If you find yourself leading, consider walking beside that person instead.
Even if they want to be led.
If you find yourself following, consider walking beside that person instead.
Even if they want to lead.
It’s a mindset.
It’s in how you’re being.
They will feel the difference.
This thing about status is false.
Everyone learns from everyone.
Some have more experience than others. How they choose to use that advantage is very telling about who they are.
On the other hand, some act differently around those they feel have a higher status, be it socioeconomically/financially, work hierarchy, celebrity, or otherwise. This also says a lot about who they are.
What’s fantastic about Camus’s quote is that he knows himself. He knows who he is.
And he’s not better than nor worse than anyone.
He’s also not the same as.
He’s him, and his friend is exactly who he or she is.
Accepting differences.
An understanding of two people living two different lives and experiencing two different worlds.
Coming together to share each other.
Walking side-by-side and looking in the same direction.
Sharing the experience.
Maybe a friend is exactly who that person needs today. Maybe you do too.
